polyglycolic acid
Degradation of PGA fibers in tissue occurs through hydrolysis, essentially the reverse of the synthesis process. The resulting glycolic acid monomers are metabolized by enzymatic pathways into carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O) as part of normal physiological processes. The suture material contains 10% lactide as a copolymer, which has only minimal influence on its physical and biological properties compared to pure PGA fibers.
The finely and precisely braided filaments offer high tensile strength while maintaining excellent flexibility. A special coating envelops the fiber bundle in a thin layer, effectively reducing surface friction. Absorbable surgical materials adapt to the tissue during healing, gradually losing tensile strength over time.
Thanks to its precisely braided polyglycolic acid filaments, PGA RESORBA® ensures standardized, medium-term absorption in tissue. After 18 days in vivo, PGA RESORBA® retains approximately 50% of its initial tensile strength.*
Violet PGA RESORBA® is coloured with a physiologically harmless dye by spin dying.
* Products manufactured by Healthium retain approximately 55 % of initial tensile strength at 21 days post-implantation.
